Abstract

Pavlova's first entrance to the Moscow literary world of the ear 1830s came with the publication of her Das Nordlicht,1 a collection of translations ending with eight of her own poems, written German. Prior to this collection, Pavlova had completed but published Russian poetry, as she did "Сфинкс" in 183 12 . T means that from her very inception as a poet Pavlova had b writing in two languages - German and Russian. German was he native language, her first mother tongue, in which she convers with her parents, relatives, and her home teachers, who taught h all the gymnasium subjects in German. Yet Russian played just important a role in her life, as an integral part of her daily existence and creative life. Although she never translated her own works from Russian into German or from German into Russian, Pavlova's German and Russian poetry are obviously of a piece with one another, adhering to one and the same system of poetics. A close scrutiny of the poetics of "Сфинкс" and the poetics of Das Nordlicht shows that her poetry in both languages bear the same unique poetic imprint.
