Abstract
This impressive and most welcome volume is a superb tool that many will wish had been available in their graduate years and early years of teaching. Spanning Russian literature from the Kievan period to the present, it foregrounds the 19th and 20th centuries, and contemporary authors in particular. Neil Cornwell has put together a superbly organized volume to facilitate the use and location of the vast material on 273 writers and 293 works prepared by 180 leading scholars in the field. Toward this end, the volume has: a steering Editor's Note, Alphaberical List of Writers and Works, Alphabetical List of Works (that have entries), Chronolocial List of Writers, General Reading List, Chronology, a brief Glossary of terms, and thirteen remarkable Introductory Essays on Russian literature "which give coveratge to most periods, topics, and genres of Rus- sian literature" (p. viii). While officially geared toward the stu-dent and general reader, none the less, instructors and even scholars of Russain literature will happily consult its fine introductory essays written by experts, who trace the development of specific areas of Russian literture and thought, as well as the volume's core entries on writers and their and writers and thier best-known works that are available in English translation. Obviously the volume is indis- pensible for teaching Russian literature, especially in translation. Obviously the volume is indispensible for teaching Russian literature, expecially in translation.
