Abstract
This DVD covers performances by Björling (both husband and wife), Melchior, Nilsson, Flagstad, Risë Stevens and Dorothy Warenskjold. It starts with Birgit Nilsson singing “Wien, Wien nur du allein soll stets die Stadt meiner träume sein.”
Lauritz Melchior, the great Danish tenor, is one I feel never got quite the reputation he deserved. There was no better Wagner tenor around. There were more beautiful sounding tenors perhaps but no one to match that stamina. He could sing Siegfried and Tristan as if his life depended on it day in and day out and he never got vocally tired. His ”In fernem Land” is really beautiful. He should have sung Otello. He would have been a great Otello. Look how similar postures Melchior and Björling have. Both built like powerhouses.
