Abstract

The Nivacle are an indigenous people who live in the sparsely populated, densely vegetated Chaco area in Northern Paraguay. Formerly known as the Chulupi, the Nivacle have lived for thousands of years in the region that lies between Bolivia and Brazil. They primarily lived a hunter/gatherer existence until the beginning of the twentieth century, when Europeans from recently settled nearby Mennonite colonies offered work opportunities to the Nivacle men at dairy collectives, cattle ranches, and farms. The women and men retain traditional customs and practices such as the artisan craft of weaving and wood carving.
