Abstract
Art historians employ various methodologies in analyzing works of art. Most commonly scholars take a socio-cultural/historical approach to understand the works. We all admit that no work of art was created in a vacuum. In studying the circumstances surrounding the culture and history of the artist, we can more fully understand the meaning of the artwork, and vice versa. Art, as a means of expression, can be seen as a historical document to help in understanding history and culture. Through studying the life and experiences of the artist as well as their influences, we can better understand both the statements they were trying to make as well as the effect the works produced on contemporary viewers.
