Abstract
Denmark was not immune to the Orientalist trend which swept Europe in the nineteenth-century. The famous fairy tale writer, Hans Christian Andersen and his artist friend, Elizabeth Baumann Jerichau, both lived in Copenhagen, and were heavily involved in the current interest in the art, people, and culture of the “exotic East.” The purpose of my research was to investigate the Orientalist overtones of The Little Mermaid, both in the fairy tale written by Andersen in 1837 and the interpretive painting by Jerichau in 1862.
