Abstract
Many institutions of higher education are expressing concern over high suicide rates amongst their students. While one recent study of suicide rates of 12 mid-western campuses reported the student suicide rate to be approximately half of the national suicide rate of 15/100000 (Silverman, Meyer, Sloane, Raffel & Pratt (1997), another review of suicide on college campuses revealed that the reported suicide rates were inconsistent, ranging from 5/100000 to 50/100000. A study by the Centers for Disease Control of the Public Health Service found that the age group with the fastest rising suicide rate was 15-24, and that those ages 20-24 approximately doubled their rate and number of suicides from 1970 to 1980 (Center for Disease Control, 1986).
