Abstract
The transition from girlhood to womanhood is a very ambiguous concept that Lou Andreas-Salome attempts to grasp in her literary novel Ruth. Andreas-Salome was an early twentieth century author and psychologist who worked with contemporaries like Friedrich Nietzsche and Rainer Maria Rilke. Her novel Ruth is often thought of as a mere autobiographical story about a young girl and her much older tutor, but there is more to the story by analyzing Ruth and showing what happens to her throughout the story as she becomes a woman.
