Abstract

In 1889, a revival of early instruments no longer used (then and now) was undertaken by the Société des Instruments Anciens. The purpose of this revival was to study and practice instruments once preferred but now almost completely unused and unknown in practice and performance. Among these instruments were the clavicembalo, the viola da gamba, and the viol d’amore. These instruments are still almost unknown to our concert rooms today. Because of this, much of the music literature for viola da gamba is rarely performed and studied. The purpose of this project is to continue the efforts of the Société des Instruments Anciens by transcribing a piece written for one of these instruments.
