Abstract

I decided to do the installation in May because that gave me the right weather for the installation as well as enough time to prepare for the exhibition of the sculpture at BYU. I had made most of the boxes for the salt and had the salt ready for transportation to the site. I rented a truck from BYU to transport all two thousand pounds of salt to Southern Utah. I drove a couple hundred miles to the desert I wanted to do the installation at. It was raining very hard; hard enough that flash floods in that are were in all rivers and drainages. I welcomed the rain because it would help my photographs look better and the lighting would be perfect, though it did make the set up many times more difficult. I left the highway and headed down the mudding road leading into the desert.
