Abstract

On June 5, 1981, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued its first warning about a relatively rare form of pneumonia among a small group of young gay men in Los Angeles. Eventually the pneumonia was connected to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, better known as AIDS. The causative agent of AIDS was a human retrovirus later known as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The HIV/AIDS epidemic has contributed to the death of 22 million people since its emergence roughly twenty years ago. Currently, 42 million people worldwide are living with either HIV or AIDS.
