Abstract

I am interested in the dilemma thatK–12 art teachers often bring up when we talk about art and teaching; the struggle to maintain their artistic identity. School is seen as a sometimes rewarding but generally time-consuming detour from the art studio. They try to keep the artist alive by making art “on the side” or in the margins of their teaching responsibilities. The conflict between teacher and artist is also apparent in the education of college art students, where the ultimate “prize” is to get the MFA and then eventually to be anointed a college teacher. The aspiration to become a teacher in a K–12 school is viewed as both a lack of ambition and seriousness about being an artist.
