Abstract

Parent's active involvement in their children's educational experience has been shown to have a positive impact on student outcomes, including academic achievement, attitude toward school, and improved skill-development. There is limited research, however, that explores how best to help parents become more involved in their children's schooling, especially across cultural groups. Currently, there are more than 14.4 million Latinx students in public elementary and secondary schools. Due to the recent increase in Latinx students within the U.S., there is a need to better understand and support Latinx parent involvement in schools. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Parents + Schools = Successful Children (PSSC) program in increasing parent involvement in Latinx families. This study used a mixed method design with concurrent triangulation to assess the effectiveness and social validity of the PSSC program for Latinx parents. Results indicated that the program significantly improved overall level of parent involvement at the school. Additionally, the program was viewed as socially valid and helpful according to parents and teachers. The significance of these results is discussed, as well as limitations and suggestions for school practices that may encourage Latinx parent involvement.
