Abstract

Andromedus "Midas" Hellebore is a half-fae necromancer living in Portland, Oregon. When he was a child, he grew up in a brothel on a fae territory near the Pacific coast on an island called Duckwell. The matron of said brothel tried to sell him to be a blood pet for a man named Mr. White, both to be a sex slave and to consistently produce fae blood, which consumed by humans could give them the magic fae folk are born with. However, a few of the escorts at the brothel - including Orla, the one who chose to raise him after his mother died - decided to dye his hair in an attempt to keep him from being sold to Mr. White, and it makes Mr. White furious. He tried to kidnap Midas and killed him in the process. Midas was resurrected by a necromancer who happened to be in the area named Isolde, and she takes him to Portland where he can be safe - and hidden from Mr. White - and learn how to become a necromancer like herself. Instead of becoming a legal necromancer like her, though, he tries to hunt down Mr. White and gets wrapped up with The Circle, a drug ring specializing in pixie; a drug made from fae blood. As The Circle's necromancer, he's coerced not only to resurrect people working for the crime boss but also asked to donate his blood regularly or else the boss, Victor, will blackmail him. The story starts with Midas being told by Victor that he needs to resurrect Victor's brother, who turns out to be Mr. White, and if he fails he will become a blood pet and Isolde will be in danger. Midas is assigned to work with Dante "Dice" Rosenfield as his bodyguard, and they have three days to find where Mr. White's body is being hidden and resurrect it before the necromancing process is corrupted by decay. Along the way, Midas questions whether he should resurrect his killer or not and which one of them deserves to live more, and begins to develop feelings for Dice as the two of them learn to work with and trust each other.
