Supplementary Material 1 Weekly soil matric potential (MP, kPa) and temperature (o C) averages for the Reduced SAP Rate field trial at the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR) conducted from Mar 2019 to Sept 2021. Superabsorbent polymer (SAP) was placed in bands at rates of 11, 330, 750, or 1500 kg ha-1 at depths of 3 (s), 8 (m), and 15 (d) cm below the soil surface with either bottlebrush squirreltail (BB) or Siberian wheatgrass (SW) seeded above it. The sensors were placed next to the dry SAP band in treated rows and at 8 cm depth directly below the seeds in control rows. Bolded and highlighted numbers are treatment ? larger than the control and higher than the wilting point (WP). No MP from Dec to Feb were bolded or highlighted even if the met those metrics because of probe limitations when soil moisture is frozen. Soil MP and temperature were measured in one row of each treatment within one block every 2 h using a Teros 21 probe (formerly Decagon MPS-6; METER Group, Inc., Pullman, Washington, USA) with a ZL6 Advanced datalogger (METER Group, Inc., Pullman, Washington, USA). These probes were installed at UTTR Mar 23, 2019. Data was averaged over each week. Malfunctions in the data loggers occasionally resulted in no data being collected. Those weeks are left blank.
