Abstract
This powerful novel follows a brave sixteen-year-old girl named Starr as she’s confronted with contemporary racism. Having witnessed the murder of her friend in an act of police brutality, she finds herself in a position to use her words as weapons, but what if she doesn’t want to fight? A current text accurately detailing important messages from the Black Lives Matter movement, themes including gang violence, rioting, and racism are given life. An important perspective for any reader, this text is timely and appropriate in its message to readers concerning the reality of “THUG LIFE.”
