Abstract
Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are having a wonderful day at the beach when Mr. Poe, their banker, shows up and tells them their parents have died in a tragic house fire. Now orphans, they stay with Mr. Poe for a time, waiting to find out who their new guardians are. When they drive by their house, they go in and Klaus finds a very curious object with the shape of an eye on the end. Mr. Poe takes them to their closest living relative, Count Olaf. The Baudelaires' quickly discover Count Olaf is only after their fortune and doesn't care for them at all. He makes them clean and cook and serve him, showing them no kindness. They try to tell Mr. Poe that Count Olaf is bad, but Mr. Poe won't listen. As Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are trying to figure out what to do, their parents are shown being taken away in a carriage, handcuffed and gagged, not knowing where they are going.
