Proper Names in Plays, by Chance or Design?

Abstract

Names of characters convey subconscious meaning to readers. The meaning is enhanced when the name is spoken aloud. This article compiles the names of all the characters in fourteen plays from the English Restoration period and analyzes possible reasons why the names might have been given.
