Abstract
Although Leonardo da Vinci's accomplishments in art, medicine, and engineering are well known, his insights into geology are not. This article seeks to bring attention to principles of geology that, widely recognized today, were first articulated by da Vinci in his manuscripts. His writings about fossils, water and erosion, and internal earth forces constitute an important and relatively unknown contribution to earth science.
